Gold Coast Theme Parks Visitor Guide

The Gold Coast is Australia’s theme park capital — five major parks within a 20-minute drive of each other. This local’s guide breaks down which park suits which family, where to stay, and how to get there from Gold Coast Airport or Brisbane without renting a car.

Dreamworld

Location: Coomera. Dreamworld is the biggest and oldest of the Gold Coast parks, and the one with the widest mix of attractions — thrill rides, family rides, a tiger enclosure, Wiggles World for toddlers, and the adjacent WhiteWater World water park on the same site.

Highlights include the Sky Voyager flight simulator, Tail Spin, Giant Drop, and the long-serving Wooden Coaster. If you’re only visiting one park and have a mixed-age group, Dreamworld is usually the best single-day pick because there’s genuinely something for everyone.

Local tip: arrive at opening time and head for the thrill rides first — queues for Tail Spin and Giant Drop can stretch past an hour by lunch on busy days.

Warner Bros. Movie World

Location: Oxenford. Movie World is the Gold Coast’s themed ride park — everything has a DC or Looney Tunes skin, and the coasters are among the best in the country. Superman Escape, DC Rivals HyperCoaster, and the Justice League 4D ride are the headline attractions.

Local tip: the afternoon parade and character meet-and-greets are scheduled — check the park app when you arrive so you don’t miss them. Fast Track passes are worth the extra cost on weekends and school holidays.

Sea World

Location: Main Beach. Sea World is the most central of the parks — on the Spit at Main Beach, about 10 minutes from Surfers Paradise. It’s a hybrid marine park and theme park. The dolphin and seal presentations, the shark bay, and the polar bear enclosure are the main draws for younger kids; there are also theme-park rides including the Storm Coaster and Jet Rescue. Best for families with kids aged 4 to 10.

Wet’n’Wild Gold Coast

Location: Oxenford (opposite Movie World). Wet’n’Wild is the biggest water park in Australia — 40-plus slides, a massive wave pool, and a lazy river. Better suited to teens and confident swimmers than toddlers. Open year-round but genuinely best on hot summer days (December to March).

WhiteWater World

Location: Coomera (attached to Dreamworld). WhiteWater World is the smaller, more family-friendly water park option. Shares admission options with Dreamworld, so the two parks work as a one-ticket combo. Better for younger families than Wet’n’Wild because the slides are gentler.

Paradise Country

Location: Oxenford. Paradise Country is the outlier — a working farm experience rather than a traditional theme park. Sheep shearing, kangaroo feeding, koala encounters, and farmer demonstrations. Perfect for visitors with children under seven. Half a day is enough.

Where to Stay for Theme Parks

Oxenford and Coomera: the closest suburbs to Dreamworld, Movie World, and Wet’n’Wild. Best if theme parks are your main priority and you don’t need nightlife.

Surfers Paradise: 20 to 30 minutes from the Oxenford/Coomera parks and 10 to 15 minutes from Sea World. Best if you want everything else (beach, shopping, restaurants) in addition to the parks.

Main Beach: 5 minutes from Sea World and 20 minutes from the other parks. Quieter than Surfers, beachfront, and a good middle-ground choice.

Our transfer guides cover the main theme park family hotels with fixed pricing and child seat availability:
Paradise Resort airport transfers — Surfers Paradise, built for families.
Sea World Resort airport transfers — Main Beach, monorail-connected to Sea World.

Getting to the Theme Parks from Gold Coast Airport

Gold Coast Airport (OOL) sits at the southern end of the coast, so the theme parks are a drive north.

OOL to Sea World (Main Beach) — approx 25 minutes
OOL to Movie World / Wet’n’Wild (Oxenford) — approx 40 minutes
OOL to Dreamworld / WhiteWater World (Coomera) — approx 45 minutes

Private transfers from Gold Coast Airport start at $80 and run door-to-door — the easiest option for families with kids, prams, and luggage.

Family transfer to the theme parks? We run private family transfers with AS/NZS 1754 certified child seats — infant capsules, toddler seats, boosters. See our child seat options.

Getting to the Theme Parks from Brisbane Airport

Brisbane Airport (BNE) is the closer airport for Dreamworld and Movie World because they sit at the northern end of the Gold Coast.

BNE to Dreamworld / WhiteWater World — approx 45 minutes
BNE to Movie World / Wet’n’Wild — approx 50 minutes
BNE to Sea World — approx 70 minutes

Private transfers from Brisbane Airport to any Gold Coast theme park or hotel start at $175.

Theme Park Tickets — How to Save

Tickets are priced per park, but most parks are owned by one of two groups: Village Roadshow (Movie World, Sea World, Wet’n’Wild, Paradise Country) and Ardent Leisure (Dreamworld, WhiteWater World). Multi-park passes only save money within the same group.

A three-park pass covering Movie World, Sea World, and Wet’n’Wild is generally the best-value multi-pass. Ticket prices are higher during school holidays. Buy online — gate prices are higher than online.

Theme Parks with Young Kids (Under 7)

For families with toddlers and pre-schoolers, the best picks are Sea World, Paradise Country, and the kids’ zones at Dreamworld (Wiggles World) and WhiteWater World.

Child seat note: Queensland law requires approved child seats for children up to age 7. GC Airport Transfers provides infant capsules, toddler seats, and boosters from $25 each — all AS/NZS 1754 certified.

Best Time to Visit Gold Coast Theme Parks

Avoid if you can: Australian school holidays (late December to late January, April, late June to mid-July, late September to early October). Queues double or triple.

Best windows: February, March, May, August, November. Weekdays beat weekends by a long way.

Weather: Movie World and Dreamworld have enough indoor rides to save a rainy day. The water parks are best on hot summer days. Winter days (June–August) can be too cold for water-park visits.
